For powerlifters — who need a thick belt to help them squat massive weights — there really is no substitute for the traditional leather weight lifting belt. Modern light-weight alternatives don’t give the same sort of support. And, interestingly enough, the modern belts usually don’t provide the same sort of feedback — called proprioception — that a thick, stiff leather belt does. Most importantly, however, this sort of heavy duty weight belt won’t give way, no matter how much weight you’re lifting. The cost is significantly more than that of low-end belts made from nylon or some other modern material. To craft leather, it takes skill and specialized equipment. To do the same with nylon is a much simpler affair. To some extent, the comfort is less than with other styles, but this is probably less a disadvantage than it is simply a fact.
